Comfy Comfort Zone

Updated: Mar 21

Let's talk about our favourite yet dreadful topic of Comfort Zones!

Am I back in the dreadful Comfort Zone?

The question we avoid asking ourselves - Am I in my comfort zone yet again? Asking this important question allows me to reflect on whether I am playing it safe or am I working towards a positive change in life? Asking this question to me is like facing the mirror, there is no escape, the only thing I see is the truth, my truth!

Staying in our comfort zones could mean anything from staying in a job we dislike or in a relationship we don't necessarily want to be in or holding on to a bad habit because it is easier to continue than to change. It could also mean not realising our full potential… because of the fear of failure and all the what ifs that follow. Known is better than the unknown, uncertainty is terrifying.

We all have goals and things we want to achieve in life. But unfortunately, or fortunately one can't realise those goals by staying in the convenient periphery of the comfort zone. One needs to cross over. The only way forward is to crossover, to expand the comfort zone.

Change, though a decision away… is scary, uncertain and painful. We tend to constantly look for excuses to avoid facing the truth. It is one thing to deal with it and a totally different thing to change it. So, what is that one decision of staying put costing you?

What has worked for me is questioning myself and my thoughts.

  • Am I playing it safe?

  • What is my fear?

  • What’s the worst that can happen?

This questioning is especially required to stir up those decisions we are often too scared to change and instead hope that time will settle it for us. Settle it does, but it doesn’t go away. They become a source of constant nagging at the back of our mind. And to stop listening to that constant pestering we indulge in things that help us distract ourselves, leading to all sorts of dependencies.

Instead what if we focused on what we really want to achieve, something that has been on our wish list, something we should have started yesterday!

In order to start working towards turning our goals into reality, we need to step out of our comfort zone or push the limits of our comfort zone to allow expansion.

Also, those goals could mean different things. For some it could mean overcoming some of our fears like fear of failure or letting go of a person that no longer serves us or changing a habit that is doing us no good.

So how about you try this once you decide to make a change...

Sit with yourself, at a time when your surroundings are calm and peaceful. Use the calm around you to quieten your mind. Focus on your breath and slowly, go deeper into the stillness of the self. Picture your goal – the goal you always wanted to achieve, picture it as coming true, feel the achievement, see what that feeling of achievement looks like for you, what it feels like. Picture yourself overcoming your fear and taking the important step of courage, feel what that feels like… Picture how the environment around you has changed because of your achievement? Picture it, feel it. What are people around you saying about you, about your achievement? How are near and dear ones feeling about it? What do you hear them say to you… Feel the outcome of your achievement, observe everything around you and absorb it.

Now ask yourself – How badly do I want to achieve my goal? Yes, you want it 100%. Be a little more courageous, and ask yourself what is stopping me? Identify it and acknowledge it. Then ask yourself, what is the first small step I can take in the direction of my goal?

A small step is all it takes. And then start small. Accumulate small accomplishments and before you know it you are on your way to realising your goal. That is all there is – taking that first small step.

Try out the visualisation meditation and let me know if it worked for you. You can also journal your thoughts and responses to the questions asked in the process.

Take that first step and break free…
